"Day at De Soto"

Ft. De Soto Park is a nature photographer’s playground, with an ever changing selection of wildlife subjects, including birds, reptiles, small mammals, butterflies and other insects. For bird photographers, Ft. De Soto is one of those places that borders on the magical, it is one of the top birding spots in Florida, possibly the East Coast. Recently ranked as the #1 beach in North America, it is also one of the best places on Florida’s west coast for beach landscape photography.

Jason will lead you throughout Ft. De Soto, taking you to the most productive areas of the park, and also areas of the park that most people rarely see. Tailoring his instruction to your skill level and interest, he will get you close to nature subjects and teach you photography concepts and techniques such as composition, exposure, and field craft. This is a great opportunity to improve your nature photography skills and see the park in a whole new way.

"Grabbing a Greenback" - Reddish Egret Sunset at Ft Desoto Park Oystercatcher with Horsehoe Crab Roseate Spoonbill Landing

  • Photography Skill Level - Any, Beginner to Pro
  • Activity Level _ Moderate. While there will not be a great deal of walking, as most subjects are within a small area, you will spend a full day in the Florida sun.
  • Likely Subjects - Birds! Wading birds of all types, shorebirds of all types, migrating songbirds, raptors, and more. Raccoons are often seen throughout the park, as well as rabbits and other small mammals. There are also plenty of macro opportunities with butterflies and wildflowers. The time of year is the main factor in what you will see, contact Jason for more details.
  • Times Offered - Year round. While the subjects may change, Ft. De Soto is great all year long and has an abundance of wildlife and scenery to photograph. The peak times of year are generally in the spring and fall, during migration, which brings a huge host of birds through the park, including some real rarities. If you have specific species you would like to work with, please let Jason know and he will recommend a date range for you to visit.
  • Price: - $325 full day, $195 half day

  • Photography Skill Level - Intermediate to Advanced

  • Likely Subjects - Osprey! In the spring you will get to see the full cycle of Osprey nesting behavior; territory claims, nest building, chicks hatching, chicks being feed, and more. It is also common to see Great Horned Owls, Bald Eagles, various hawks, and more. Honeymoon Island is also a great place to photograph woodpeckers and songbirds. Other animals frequently seen include raccoons, rabbits, and a large population of gopher tortoises. Scenic possibilities include miles of beaches, nature trails, wildflowers and more.
  • Times Offered - February through April. While Honeymoon Island can be great all year long, the peak of Osprey activity and migrating songbirds is during the late winter/early spring months. These months bring a large number of birds through the park, including some rare species.
